Make the most of embarkation day with these essential cruise tips!

Your cruise vacation officially begins the moment you step on board—but your experience begins well before that. Whether you’re brand new to cruising or a seasoned sailor, your first day can set the tone for the entire trip.

Here are 10 tried-and-true tips to help you start your cruise off right—no matter what cruise line you’re sailing.

1. Arrive at Your Port a Day Early (or Two)

Travel delays are unpredictable, and cruise ships wait for no one. Flying in the same day your cruise departs is risky—especially if you’re crossing the country or flying internationally. To avoid stress, aim to arrive the day before. For longer travel, two days early gives you even more breathing room to recover and explore.

Bonus: You start your vacation well-rested instead of rushing from gate to gangway.

2. Bring Cash for Tipping

Even if you’ve pre-paid gratuities, you’ll encounter people who aren’t cruise line employees—like porters handling your bags, rideshare drivers, and independent excursion guides. Having small bills on hand is a thoughtful way to tip for great service. In most ports, U.S. dollars are fine.

3. Try for an Early Boarding Time

Each cruise line handles boarding differently, but many offer scheduled embarkation windows. These can fill up quickly, so check in online as early as possible. Some cruise lines prioritize loyalty members and suite guests for earlier access. Early boarding means you can start enjoying lunch, cocktails, and the ship with fewer crowds.

4. Watch Your Muster Video Early

The muster drill—your cruise ship’s safety briefing—is mandatory, but it’s much easier now than it used to be. Most cruise lines let you watch a short safety video on your phone or cabin TV. You’ll still need to check in at your muster station before the ship sails, so knock it out early and enjoy the rest of your day stress-free.

5. Check That Your Cabin Is in Working Order

Once cabins are ready (usually mid-afternoon), head to your room and do a quick walk-through. Check the:

  • Sink, shower, and toilet

  • A/C and lighting

  • Mattress, pillows, and bedding

  • Dispensers for soap/shampoo

  • Safe and outlets

If anything’s missing or not working, let your cabin attendant know early. You may also be able to request things like extra pillows, hangers, or even a mattress topper to improve your comfort.

6. Pack a Carry-On

Your checked luggage may not arrive at your cabin for several hours, so keep your essentials with you. Your carry-on should include:

  • Cruise documents and ID/passport

  • Medications

  • Swimwear, sunscreen, and a change of clothes

  • Electronics and chargers

Pro tip: Your carry-on will go through airport-style security, so keep it compact and compliant.

7. Avoid the Buffet Rush

Buffet crowds on embarkation day are no joke. While they’re popular for convenience, most ships offer alternative dining options that are less busy and more relaxing. Ask a crew member what’s open—you might discover a hidden gem. (For example, I love heading to The Dock on Virgin Voyages for small bites and a great view!)

8. Unpack Before Dinner

Take 10–15 minutes to fully unpack once your bags arrive. You’ll feel more settled, and you won’t be rifling through suitcases all week. Bring wrinkle release spray to freshen up clothes, and check if your cruise line offers laundry or loaner steamers.

9. Connect to Ship Wi-Fi and Use Airplane Mode

If you’re using ship Wi-Fi, now’s the time to log in and make sure everything works. Don’t forget to switch your phone to airplane mode once the ship sails to avoid expensive roaming charges. Many ships offer Wi-Fi calling and messaging options so you can stay connected if needed.

10. Secure Your Valuables

Once you’re settled in your cabin, place important items—like your passport, jewelry, cash, or electronics—inside the safe. Be sure to test that the safe locks and opens properly before you head out for sailaway.

Start Your Vacation the Right Way

Your cruise doesn’t have to begin with stress or chaos. With just a little planning, you can breeze through embarkation day, enjoy your first cocktail in peace, and feel totally in vacation mode before the ship even sails.
