For several years, I worked in Washington, DC for a software company, and driving into the city never got old. I always felt a sense of awe and pride as I passed by monuments and architecturally significant buildings on my way to the office. The city changes with the seasons, and every version has its own kind of magic—but the time when the cherry blossoms are in full bloom might just be the most beautiful of all.
There’s something really special about gathering with thousands of others on Independence Day to watch the fireworks over the National Mall. But for me, cherry blossom season wins the title of “Best Time to Be in DC.” It’s pure springtime joy.
While the cherry blossoms might be peaking right now, this is actually the perfect time to start planning your trip for next year. DC during cherry blossom season is iconic—but it’s also popular, so a little planning goes a long way. Or if you’re dreaming even bigger, maybe this is the year you plan a trip abroad to see cherry blossoms elsewhere in the world!
A Little History
Cherry blossom celebrations have been a cherished tradition in Japan for centuries, where the bloom is seen as a symbol of renewal and the fleeting beauty of life. In 1912, Japan gifted the United States thousands of cherry trees as a gesture of friendship, and they were planted around the Tidal Basin in Washington, DC. For over 100 years, Americans have joined in the tradition of admiring the delicate pink petals every spring.

The National Cherry Blossom Festival
Every year, DC celebrates with the National Cherry Blossom Festival, which typically runs from late March into early April. There are all kinds of events, from art exhibits to cultural performances, but one of the highlights is the National Cherry Blossom Festival Parade—a colorful, high-energy event that’s definitely worth checking out.

More Cherry Blossoms Around the World
While DC gets a lot of attention, it’s far from the only place where you can enjoy the magic of cherry blossom season. Here are a few more destinations that know how to put on a floral show:
Tokyo, Japan – The original cherry blossom capital, where hanami (flower viewing) is a deeply cherished tradition.
Seoul, South Korea – Parks and palace grounds come alive with petals and picnics.
Vancouver, Canada – A lesser-known gem with over 40,000 cherry trees spread throughout the city.
